Artifidal stereophonic image enhancement techniques for loudspeaker reproduction are well known in the literature. The general goals of such methods are to simulate the desirable properties of a natural listening environment, to reduce the dependence of the reproduced sound on the peculiarities of the listening room, and to broaden the perceived width and depth of the reproduced sound field--ideally to dimensions beyond the physical locations of the loudspeakers. In this paper a representative group of stereophonic image enhancement techniques are reviewed and several new strategies are proposed.
